National Old-Time Banjo champion Dan Knowles and His Hot Band will perform at Fiddle & Pick on Friday, June 27th at 7:30 P.M, with special guests Tim May, Gretchen Priest-May, Mark McWherter, and Eddie Coffey. The cost is $10. On the following day, Saturday, June 28th, at 1 PM, Dan Knowles will hold a Masters Clawhammer Banjo Workshop for students at beginning skill level to advanced for $25 per student.
Dan Knowles has won or placed in over 20 major competitions, including winning the National Old-Time Banjo Championship in 2003, and the Tennessee State Old-Time Banjo Championship five times -- the most wins for any one artist in the history of the contest. He has been named a Tennessee State Touring Artist 2001-2006 by the Memphis Arts Council. Because of his far reaching mastery of the clawhammer banjo, Dan was chosen to endorse Nechville banjos along with Dixie Chick Emily Robison, Bela Fleck, and Allison Brown. Dan has co-designed a new line of open-backed banjos named the Moonshine, with Tom Nechville. As Bill Wagner wrote in Bluegrass Unlimited, "FANTASTIC...rarely have I heard clawhammer banjo used in such a progressive manner."
As a veteran entertainer of over 25 years, Dan has been billed with a wide variety of top acoustic music personalities including Nickel Creek, Bela Fleck, Mark O'Connor, David Grisman, Laurie Lewis, Taj Mahal, Tony Rice, Riders in the Sky, Randall Hylton, Jim & Jesse, Charlie Louvin, and many others. Dan has performed in a great variety of venues including festivals, concerts, riverboats, fairs, colleges, civil war re-enactments, clubs, television, and radio.
