We absolutely need to have that "reference finger" targeted so that we have a better chance of executing the notes that we've rehearsed-the ingredient to add is the "what is it part". We will eventually start to associate the "where is it" and the...

Actually this is a common problem among guitar players. Pretty much every student I have resorts to "fingers and ears" from past systems that have "worked" for them. The frustrating part is these old systems are not transferable to more challengin...

And one other thing (I guess I'm a little on the defensive here), when you're keeping the root in mind and playing the arp, the place where the arp starts (the reference-finger for finding the arp, for me at least) and the root of the chord are of...

I'll try not to take this personally since I was the one in the room whose brain wasn't in the game that night (shoot... my brain wasn't even in the ball park), but even when I'm prepared and have a game plan, I'm always a beat or two behind where...

When the world of harmony starts to get more complicated (or your just trying to add stuff to your present repertoire of licks) guitar players have to move away from "my 3 finger plays this on this fret and it sounds like that" system. The essenti...

For many guitarists (and other musicians as well) playing is a "spectator sport". We'll play something and then approve or disapprove of it after the fact-basically constantly putting ourselves in repair or recovery mode. For improvisation hearing...

And since it's related to what we've worked on.
Here's Les Paul and Mary Ford doing "How High The Moon"

Les invented multitrack recording and this song was one of the very first sound on sound multitrack releases.

Hey Paul and all guitarists. We were discussing the passing of the great Les Paul in our jazz class last night. Here's a really delightful youtube performance by Les Paul and Mary Ford. . .demonstrating what a terrific guitarist SHE is!

Great class last night! You folks who are interested in stretching your brains and fingers in the jazz direction are missing some great stuff.

Thanks for the heads-up Paul. Unfortunately I can't make it tonight. . .my mother has just moved in with us and we're up to our necks in major changes. . .we'll be into the augmented changes by the weekend (little jazz humor there ;-)
Hope to see you next week.

Hi Paul -- Just wanted to let you know that Dizzy Gillespie's "To Be or Not to Bop" that you told us about is back in print! In paperback, as of February 2009. I got a new copy on Amazon for $15 and just started it this evening.

How do folks feel about working on "Stardust" as our next project for the jazz workshop? I'm fairly intimidated by that one and would like some guidance for dealing with it. There are a heckuva lot of changes in it, but they don't come at you quite as fast as some tunes.

Most of us play our accoustic guitars at the jam sessions here. But I was just wondering how many of you also own and play electric guitars. What kind? And what amp do you have? Tell us about it. As for me, I have a 1979 Gibson ES-175D, an arche...
