How 'bout a Winter schedule? Holidays are a-comin' and I'd love to get you on my calendar.

I attended the sister event to this one at the Green Hills Library and it was extremely interesting. I had already finished reading the book so I was familiar with the things she was talking about. If you remember Janis in her Hay Day and the song At Seventeen you would really enjoy hearing her speak. This is for a good cause also.

Hold May 30 for the Edmondson Pike Library!

From: Janis Ian

Hi all,
I'm appearing at the Edmondson Pike Library at 2 pm, Saturday May 30th, telling stories from my book and raising money for the library by selling my autobiography and the accompanying CD after the talk . All net proceeds will go directly to the branch. The last time I did this, we raised over $1,000 for the Green Hills Library.
If you love books and want the library doors to stay open, please help out by forwarding this to anyone who might be interested in attending . If you love me, please do the same - I don't want to be the idiot who only drew three people to a library fundraiser...

Thanks,
Janis

Angela, thank you so much for getting the word out. I'm working up "You are My Flower" (AP Carter -- a great arrangement is on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band CD) and am excited about tomorrow.

Have you guys seen this from Linda Sack?

I won't get to go, but thought some of you might be interested:

You're invited to come out this Saturday night, March 28, at 7:00 p.m. for an evening of music and art at Lulu's Cafe in Watertown, TN. http://luluscoffeehouse.com/ 120 East Main St. Watertown, TN 37184 (615) 237- 0065

I'm playing an almost show -- me and my dulcimers -- with songs from my new album (www.myspace.com/lindasack ) and a few Carter family songs I've been working up. The Carter family basically invented country music....Johnny Cash's wife, June, was the daughter of "Mother Maybelle Carter," who made many a song famous in the 1920's onward, along with cousin Sarah and A.P. Carter.

The lovely Kathy Sparkle will open for me and will sing harmonies on a few songs, playing her guitar.

The show is free. Lulu's is just outside of Nashville near Lebanon and serves food. There will be an art opening at the gallery next door. Would love to see you there.

I NEVER did well in jams in the beginning, actually for years, with a few exceptions. Comfort for me was putting myself in an uncomfortable jamming environment and doing my best. I did have trouble wondering why it was so hard for me. I kept wishing I was more talented. I learned to quit listening to these thoughts in my head. I went through a lot of frustration to get to where I am today.

Seek out comfortable jams with folks at or near your level. Just as important, maybe more, seek out jams that push you to your very limits. It's the trial by fire and rising to the occasion that eventually helped me to be a better player.

I want our jam to be a place where this process can happen. ALL are welcome to ignore the critical voices in their heads. I encourage everyone to jump in and make as many "mistakes" as needed to get better. I think there's a lot of myths about talent and music and I'd like this jam to be an opportunity for folks to be the best musicians they can be. You're not SUPPOSED to know what you're doing in the beginning. I sometimes think accomplished musicians have gone through just as much trouble learning as anyone, they just don't let it deter them from their love of music and their desire to get better.

Stephen, this comment is for you. A month ago in Silver City, NM a two-day event called "Pickamania" was held. In one of the bands was a guy from Nashville who said that he and his wife use your building on Wed. nights. Sorry I don't remember his name. He was to say "Hi" from me!!

I love the old-time mountain gospel on dulcimer.Must have tabs though it makes me much more comfortable. I'm very much out of practice but just enjoy the instrument so much. I put up with myself!
Joyce Vann Comment by Joyce Vann on August 31, 2008 at 2:58pm
Music tab always makes me feel comfortable in a jam. I am not speaking of toe jam or a traffic jam. As long as the light is good and I can see someone elses finger position I can usually follow along in most songs. I love learning any old time music.
Wanda Comment by Wanda on August 23, 2008 at 3:18pm
Fiddle tunes are always good, but folks like me just don't do well in jams. I haven't played long enough to be comfy ...
denise Comment by denise on August 22, 2008 at 6:55pm
slow tunes or fiddle tunes make a good jam.I'd like to join a jam and be able to play even if I don't know the songs. Play chords or something....must be a secret to it....
