Thanks for the folks who expressed their desire to continue the Bluegrass Rookies.   I hope everyone who MIGHT be interested in this will post comments so we can get this session where it needs to be to do the most good.  The people who met last night agreed on the following list of songs/tunes to work on.

Sweetheart of Mine (Can't You Hear Me Callin)  G

Old Joe Clark  A

Roll in My Sweet Baby's Arms  G

Blue Ridge Cabin Home  A

Amazing Grace  G

Little Georgia Rose G

High On a Mountain Top  G

Hey Stan,
I'd attend this if I didn't have to miss the jam to do so. Hate to have to choose between the two. Another day would be better for me. What about Saturday?

Sorry, but I have to cancel for the Bluegrass Rookies this week. Got a gig I have to rehearse for, and the others involved could only make it tonight (Thursday).  I'm considering re scheduling or perhaps a temporary hiatus for this activity. . . attendance has been quite sporadic, and the last couple of times there weren't enough to make a band.  Do folks involved in this have suggestions, complaints, comments of any kind?

I will not there tonight, head cold from Hades, double ear infection and a ruptured eardrum.Hope to see you next time!

Hey Folks, unless there are objections (in which case someone has to learn the words and be prepared to sing and lead the song), I am deleting My Walkin Shoes Don't Fit Me Anymore from the songlist. It was Daniel's pick, and since he has left us for the wilds of New England, we should replace it.

Comment by Bobby Owen on January 3, 2013 at 6:20pm

Sheri, there is no turning back now. You have made the leap! Don't FRET over the number of songs, you'll have them down before you know it. And if you don't, that's ok too. No pressure from any of us.

We're all doin the best we can with what we got. . . and remember: just take away ONE thing that will stick with you for each of these sessions.  It adds up.  If you can't come up with a whole break, go for half; we'll do split breaks. . . they sound real nice and musical.  Great to see the discussion here.

Happy New Year!

Hey Thanks Bobby!  I'll at least try to learn the chord progression by next class.  I am currently working 7 days a week so I'm going to have to pick only a couple I can come with a solo  for.  I should be able to do "Little Cabin Home on the Hill" no problem and I am currently working on a banjo break for "Roll in My Sweet Baby's Arms".  For the others, I'll at least learn the chord progression.  Man, Stan's really working us!  I might need to hang with the Slow Jammers from now on!  :)

Hey Phillip / Sheri, we do Walking Shoes in G. Hope you have a happy 2013.

On "Walking Shoes", I was playing G shapes, but I don't remember if we had the capo on - so was it in "G" or "A"?

We were also doing Bill Cheatham and Old Joe Clark

Set Dance Class

It's time to set dance again!  Our next class is scheduled for Monday, March 31, from 6:30 to 7:45 at the Friends Meeting House.  That would be tomorrow.  Yikes!  Sorry for the short notice. We will start on the North Kerry Set which is a great one for learning the "round the house" move and we might revisit a figure or two from previous classes.  So far we have danced the Kildownet Half Set, Antrim Square Set, and Aran Set.  Here are some representative youtube videos in case you want to take…See More

April 2014 Calendar with Fliers

March “St Patty's month” reflections: I want to thank our music community for their support to the Center getting  us through a tough month. March started with a “bud” then kept blossoming! The students played beautifully at the Irish celebration. The weather held off till all the games, prizes, and dances were over! Then next was “Breakin' Up Winter” Old-Time Music Retreat followed by a whirlwind of St Pat's events. MHC was on location two places at the same time! The big Nashville contra…See More

Is there bluegrass gospel in heaven?

Fred and Silas picked some bluegrass gospel every morning before lunch at the retirement home. One day Fred asked Silas if he thought they would be able to pick bluegrass gospel when they got to heaven. Silas was sure he didn't have a clue but he hoped that they would. After they had eaten lunch they retired to their respective rooms for their afternoon naps. Well, that same afternoon, Fred passed away in his sleep. That very night Fred appeared to Silas in a dream."I've got good news and bad…See More

Interesting article

Here goes:This is a great article I would like to share. At the center I watch multiple levels of players and even great musicians that get excited to learn about a new genre.  I LOVE that excitement because I have it too. There is an underlying problem occasionally, which is that often a musician thinks that just because they are very fluent with one style (Jazz, rock, classical or any other style) that they automatically think they are an advanced player in a new style that they know nothing…See More
