If you play a little rhythm guitar and wondered where you could find great old songs to sing, you’ll want to know about FOLKSLINGERS.
FOLKSLINGERS is a group of women who gather twice a month in search of music suitable for the rhythm guitar and a female voice. Award-winning folksinger and guitar teacher Susie Coleman leads FOLKSLINGERS, providing lyrics, chord charts, song history and playing tips for both popular and obscure Folk and Gospel standards in keys meant for the female voice. Susie demonstrates how to play and sing each tune, helps everyone understand timing and chord charts, and shows how to intro and end the songs. The remaining time is devoted to jam time where singers share their favorites.
Part group guitar class, part Girls-Night-Out, our sessions appeal to aspiring songwriters, singers who want to broaden their repertoire, and women and girls who play for their own enjoyment and come to learn tunes. Some just come for the jam segment, enjoying the opportunity to practice songs we learned in prior weeks. Each group votes on which songs they’d like to cover at the next gathering and everyone present is encouraged to bring some of their personal favorites to the table.
The guitar skill level necessary is Early Intermediate to Intermediate. Every session starts with a brief overview of chord shapes and progressions to help newer guitarists understand the chord charts we’ll be using that evening. We go over timing issues and demonstrate one or two possible ways to strum the tune. Note that WE PLAY COMPLETELY BY EAR. We use no written scores, instead working with chord families and chord charts.
No membership is required; visit any time to pick up a new tune or three.
Each session costs $20 for adults, $15 for students, payable to Susie Coleman.
A portion of all proceeds go to support the Musical Heritage Center of Middle Tennessee.
